Significance of Varuthini Ekadashi
Varuthini Ekadashi is discerned during Krishna Paksha of Vaishakha month according to the North Indian Purnimant calendar and Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month according to South Indian Amavasyant calendar. However both North Indian and South Indian discern it on the same day.
Ekadashi Parana is accomplished after dawn on the next day of the Ekadashi fast. It is essential to do Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before daylight. Not doing Parana within Dwadashi is similar to a sin.
Parana should not be performed during Hari Vasara. One should wait for Hari Vasara to finish before halting the fast. Hari Vasara is the first one-fourth duration of Dwadashi Tithi. The most apropos time to break the fast is Pratahkal(morning time). One should prevent breaking the fast during Madhyahna(mid-noon). If due to some reason one is not able to break the fast during Pratahkal then one should do it after Madhyahna(afternoon).
At times Ekadashi fasting is indicated on two successive days. It is instructed that Smartha with their family should discern fasting on the first day only. The alternate Ekadashi fasting, which is the second one, is indicated for Sanyasis, widows, and for those who want Moksha. When alternate Ekadashi fasting is implied for Smartha it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day.
Rituals associated with Varuthini Ekadashi
On Ekadashi, proponents do not consume anything or even take a sip of water all day. However, if someone cannot keep a stringent rat, partial fasting or even fast from morning till twilight is also allowed. While keeping the fast, the person should not snooze during the daytime and stay away from guilty feelings and litigations. It is a popular belief that one who stays awake all night shouting in unison sacred choruses on Ekadashi will gain freedom from all their sins.
