Legends associated with Vaikunth Chaturdashi

The most common legend associated with this day is of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. It believed Lord Vishnu from Vaikuntha went to Kashi to worship Lord Shiva by offering him 1000 lotuses and seeking his blessing. While he was carrying out the Abhishek, Lord Shiva hid some of the flowers to check his devotion. Seeing the less number of flowers, he thought to himself that he could offer one of his eyes to the Lord as he was also known as ‘Kamal Nayan’, so he went forward to do the same. Seeing such devotion Lord Shiva was impressed and gave him his eyes back and blessed him with a Golden Chakra that had the radiance of million suns.

Another legend that revolves around the same reason is a Brahmin named Dhaneshwar who spent most of his life indulging in several sins, but one day he decided to visit the Godavari to wash off his sins and ask for the lord’s blessings. It was Vaikuntha Chaturdashi on that day so while he was washing off his sins he mingled with the crowd and worshipped the Lord. When he died Yama came to take him away but Lord Shiva stopped him and told that he has been cleansed of all his sins so he will go to heaven. So Yama released him from hell.

Significance of Vaikunth Chaturdashi

This is the only day when Lord Vishnu is given a special place of honor in the sanctum of Kashi Vishwanath Temple, a renowned Lord Shiva temple in Varanasi. It is believed that the Vishwanath temple becomes as divine as Vaikuntha on the very same day.

It is also believed that those who worship Lord Shiva and Vishnu on this day while keeping a fast will go to heaven no matter what. As the gates of heaven open on this day, devotees also observe this fast as a way to get rid of their past sins.
