Other than zodiac signs, the ancient sagas divided the zodiac into 27 Nakshatras also known as constellations (each of 13.20 degrees). As per Hindu-Mythology moon spends approximately one day in each Nakshatra.
These Nakshatras are broadly categorized under the 3 heads of Deva (divine), Nara (human), and Asura (Demonic). Nakshatras have been further classified as various attributes like owner, deity, caste, etc. The birth star or Janma Nakshatra is identified by knowing the placement of the moon in Nakshatra at the time of birth.
Nakshatras are further divided into four quarters known to be Pada. For finer predictions, the placement of planets in padas is studied, each zodiac covers about nine padas each, and the nakshatra is also majorly used to determine the starting point of Dasha and is also used in choosing an auspicious time for any important activity also.
